The Very Best of Therapy: Life Changing Words from Therapists
I made a TikTok asking my audience for the best advice they’ve ever received in therapy, and the response was overwhelming.
I recently posted a TikTok video asking people who’ve been in therapy to talk about the most profound thing their therapist ever said to them or that’s ever happened in their therapy experience, including the best advice they’ve ever received in therapy.
I never imagined that sooooooo many people would have therapy experiences so meaningful that they have stayed with them to this day. Many talked of a pivotal moment or piece of advice from a therapist that changed the way they saw the world and thus altered the course of their life in the best way possible. If anyone ever wondered if therapy really helps people……hell yes it does!
Some of the best therapy advice comes down to this: the bad thing that happened to you wasn’t your fault.
Some of the responses that stood out to me had to do with a client receiving therapy advice that made them realize — after years and years of self blame and self loathing — that the bad thing that happened to them was never their fault.
Imagine the power of being able to let go of a long held belief that negatively shapes the way you view yourself….that is powerful beyond measure.
Here are some of the pieces of therapy advice that gave me goosebumps!
Here are some of the pieces of advice from therapists that gave me goosebumps:
🩷“Are people untrustworthy or was just your mother untrustworthy?”
🩷“You are inherently good and deserving of love”
🩷“Your symptoms presented themselves when you were an adult because that’s when you finally felt safe enough to be vulnerable and actually feel your emotions”
🩷“The way my therapist looks at me makes me feel seen, heard and like I am an actual human being”
🩷“I am here with you, I will stay with you and I won’t leave you”
🩷“If your tears could speak, what would they say”?
🩷“I see you”
🩷“You are and always have been worthy of love and acceptance”
🩷“Whose voice is that, because it certainly isn’t yours?”
🩷“People aren’t necessarily against you, they’re just for themselves”
🩷“I will catch you if you fall”
🩷“I believe in you”
🩷“Maybe you are an orchid who grew up in a desert”
🩷“I can be the protagonist of my own life”
🩷“It takes one brave person to break the cycle”
🩷“That I matter”
So, my fellow therapists, you ARE making a difference with your advice and support. Take that to heart.
I have never felt as proud to be a therapist as I did reading those comments. We are doing life changing work and it warms my heart to no end.
To all the therapists out there who sometimes wonder if they are really making a difference in anyone lives….you are. And you matter.
By the way, I’m Alyse! And, yes, you can work with me!
If we haven’t met, I really think we ought to! When I’m not running my Huntington, New York based therapy practice, I’m coaching other therapists to help them get off of insurance panels, create self-pay private practices, do kick ass clinical work, and fall in love with their work again.
If you want to learn more about my work supporting therapists and other mental health professionals, contact me today!
And, if you’re looking for therapy, I can help. I offer one-on-one therapy in person in Huntington Village, New York — easily accessible to Suffolk County and Nassau County in Long Island — and online therapy to those living anywhere in New York State.
Hope to talk to you soon!
